Project scope

The A9N Project covers the A9N Microkernel as its core together with boot, kernel-call interfaces, a user-level runtime, a user-space OS, and the build and execution environment. Its scope includes both the kernel and the common software needed to compose a system on it.

Each component is developed in an independent repository and connected through published interfaces. This separation allows the kernel, runtime, and OS to evolve independently while the standard composition is verified as a complete system.

How the components fit together

In the standard composition, the following stages turn source code into a running system. Projects lists the individual repositories and their roles.

Build

SPENCER obtains and builds the components and produces a bootable disk image.

Boot

A9NLoader-rs loads A9N Microkernel and the initial user-level program and supplies boot information.

Kernel

A9N Microkernel provides the basic mechanisms for capabilities, address spaces, exceptionally fast IPC, notifications, and interrupts.

User level

a9n_types and a9n_abi define the kernel interface, while Nun provides the Init runtime. User-level systems such as Nanami OS are built on top.

The role of A9N Microkernel

A9N Microkernel is the center of the A9N Project and the execution and protection foundation on which the other components depend. Ordinary user-level software uses the kernel through capability calls and YIELD. The kernel provides common mechanisms including exceptionally fast IPC, while system-specific policy remains at user level.

The public implementation is currently developed for x86_64. See the A9N Manual under Documents for details of kernel calls, objects, and the boot protocol.
